Chevra Kadisha
In Jewish tradition, the sacredness of the human being does not end with
death. Just as a newborn child is washed and enters the world clean and
pure, so is the departed cleansed and made pure through the ritual of taharah,
performed by a small group of dedicated men and women called the Chevra Kadisha
(the Holy \ Burial Society). The deceased is ritually bathed and dressed
in a plain, white, linen shroud called a tachrichim, a sign that all human
beings are equal in the sight of God. Men prepare men and women prepare
women.
Assuming the religious obligation of preparing the
deceased with dignity and in accordance with Jewish law and tradition is one of
the greatest mitzvot in Judaism. If you would like to participate in the
Chevra Kadisha, the process is simple and members are needed. Please
contact the funeral home for more information.
